Why you need it
Hawthorn (Crataegus species) berries — also known as haws — have been used since the 19th century as a traditional cardiovascular tonic herb. The deep red berries are among the most antioxidant-rich fruits in the plant kingdom, loaded with a broad spectrum of protective phytonutrients:
- Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) — powerful antioxidant flavonoids that strengthen and protect blood vessel walls, reduce capillary fragility, and support vascular integrity
- Anthocyanins — the pigments responsible for the deep red colour, with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that protect cardiovascular tissue from oxidative damage
- Vitexin and other flavone glycosides — the primary bioactive compounds associated with hawthorn's venotonic and vasodilatory effects, supporting healthy blood flow and cardiac muscle tone
- Dietary fibre — supports digestive health and healthy cholesterol levels
Whole hawthorn berries offer the complete phytonutrient matrix of the fruit — a valuable complement to or alternative for hawthorn capsule supplements, particularly for those who prefer whole-food herbal preparations.
