Why you need it

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is one of the most widely used and extensively researched medicinal plants in the world, with a history spanning thousands of years across Asian, Ayurvedic, and traditional Western herbal medicine. The cut and sifted form preserves the root in larger pieces than powder, making it the preferred choice for:

  • Herbal teas and decoctions — simmering cut ginger root in water extracts a rich, warming brew with a more robust and complex flavour than powder-based teas
  • Infusions and syrups — steeping in hot water, honey, or sugar syrup to create homemade ginger syrups for beverages, cocktails, and cooking
  • Tinctures — macerating in alcohol to produce concentrated ginger tinctures for herbal medicine use
  • Culinary use — adding directly to soups, broths, curries, and slow-cooked dishes where the pieces can be removed before serving
  • Oxymel and vinegar infusions — traditional preparations combining ginger with honey and apple cider vinegar

The bioactive compounds responsible for ginger's health benefits are gingerols (predominant in fresh root) and shogaols (formed during drying, more potent than gingerols), along with a broad spectrum of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and phenolic antioxidants. These compounds support:

  • Digestive health — stimulates digestive enzymes and bile, supports gastric motility, relieves bloating and indigestion
  • Nausea relief — clinically studied for motion sickness, morning sickness, and post-operative nausea
  • Anti-inflammatory support — gingerols and shogaols inhibit COX-1, COX-2, and 5-LOX inflammatory pathways
  • Circulatory warmth — a traditional warming herb to support healthy blood flow

Suggested use

As a herbal tea: Add 1–2 teaspoons of cut ginger root to 250–500ml of cold water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes. Strain and serve. Sweeten with honey if desired, or add lemon juice. For a lighter infusion, steep in boiling water for 5–10 minutes without simmering.

Daily serving size: ⅛ teaspoon (approximately 250mg) as a dietary supplement.

In cooking: Add directly to soups, broths, curries, and slow-cooked dishes. Remove pieces before serving or leave in for a more intense flavour.
