What is damiana and what does it do?
Damiana (Turnera diffusa) is a small, aromatic flowering shrub native to Mexico, Central America, and the southwestern United States, where it grows wild in dry, rocky terrain. It has been used for centuries by indigenous peoples of Mexico — particularly the Maya — as a tonic herb for the reproductive system, a mood-lifting nervine, and one of the most celebrated traditional aphrodisiacs in the Americas. Spanish missionaries documented its use as a love herb as early as the 17th century, and it has been used ever since to make traditional lovers’ teas, flavoured wines, and the famous Mexican damiana liqueur. Damiana’s key active compounds include flavonoids, terpenoids (including thymol and cineole), gonzalitosin, arbutin, and damianin — a compound unique to the plant. These compounds are believed to work together to support healthy libido and sexual function, ease nervous tension and anxiety, lift mood, and support the body’s response to stress. As a nervine herb, damiana has a gentle stimulating and mood-elevating effect — distinct from sedating nervines like valerian or passionflower — making it particularly useful for those experiencing low energy, low mood, or nervous exhaustion alongside reduced libido.
