What is burdock root and what does it do?
Burdock (Arctium lappa) is a biennial plant native to Europe and North Asia, now found across the globe — and one of the most important alterative herbs in both Western and Eastern herbal traditions. An “alterative” herb is one that gradually improves the condition of the blood and tissues, supporting the body’s natural cleansing and elimination processes. Burdock root has a particular affinity for the skin, liver, and lymphatic system — making it a cornerstone herb in traditional protocols for skin conditions, liver support, and blood purification. Its key active compounds include inulin (a prebiotic fibre that feeds beneficial gut bacteria), polyacetylenes (with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties), sesquiterpene lactones, and a range of vitamins and minerals. Inulin is particularly significant — burdock root is one of the richest plant sources of this prebiotic fibre, which supports a healthy gut microbiome, improves bowel regularity, and helps regulate blood sugar. Burdock root also has mild diuretic properties, supporting kidney function and the elimination of waste products through the urine. In Japanese and Asian cuisine, burdock root (known as gobo) is a popular vegetable with an earthy, sweet, and mild flavour — used in miso soup, stir-fries, sushi rolls, and stews. Frontier’s burdock root is carefully harvested in Bulgaria (roots can extend several feet into the soil for maximum potency), kosher certified, and non-irradiated.

How to use
As a tea: Pour 240ml (8 oz) of boiling water over 1 tsp of burdock root. Cover and steep for 3–5 minutes. Strain and enjoy. For a stronger brew, simmer as a decoction.
As a decoction: Add 1–2 tsp of root to 2 cups of cold water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 15–20 minutes. Strain and drink 1–2 cups daily.
As a culinary vegetable (gobo): Use in Japanese miso soup (tonjiru), stir-fries, sushi rolls, soups, and stews. Soak in water before cooking to reduce bitterness. Pairs well with carrots, sesame, and soy.
As a tincture base: Use in standard tincture preparation with food-grade alcohol. Follow established herbal medicine protocols.
Consult a healthcare practitioner before use if taking medications (particularly diuretics or blood thinners), are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a known allergy to plants in the Asteraceae/daisy family.
