⚠️ Important safety information — please read before use
This is whole licorice root, which contains glycyrrhizin — the active compound responsible for licorice’s potent effects. Glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure, cause fluid retention (oedema), and lower potassium levels when used in high doses or over extended periods. It is not the same as DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice), from which glycyrrhizin has been removed.
Do not use this product if you have: hypertension (high blood pressure), liver disorders, oedema (fluid retention), severe kidney insufficiency, low blood potassium (hypokalaemia), heart disease with oedema, or congestive heart failure.
Do not use during pregnancy except under the supervision of a qualified healthcare practitioner.
Not for prolonged use or high doses except under the supervision of a qualified healthcare practitioner. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if taking any medications, particularly corticosteroids, diuretics, or antihypertensives.
What is licorice root and what does it do?
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra and related species) is one of the oldest and most universally used medicinal herbs in the world — documented in ancient Egyptian, Greek, Chinese, and Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. The root has a distinctively sweet, anise-like flavour — glycyrrhizin is approximately 50 times sweeter than sugar — and a broad range of traditional therapeutic applications. In Western herbal medicine, licorice root is primarily used as a soothing demulcent for the respiratory tract (easing coughs, sore throats, and bronchial irritation), a digestive tonic (soothing gastric inflammation and supporting healthy gut lining), and an adrenal tonic (supporting the adrenal glands and cortisol metabolism, particularly in cases of adrenal fatigue). In traditional Chinese medicine, licorice root (Gan Cao) is one of the most frequently used herbs — valued as a harmonising herb that moderates the effects of other herbs in a formula, supports the spleen and stomach, and clears heat and toxins. Glycyrrhizin, the key active compound, has potent anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and expectorant properties. It also has a cortisol-sparing effect — inhibiting the enzyme that breaks down cortisol, which can support adrenal function but also contributes to the blood pressure and fluid retention effects at high doses. Cut and sifted for easy measuring and brewing as a decoction (simmered tea), tincture, or herbal preparation.

How to use
As a decoction (simmered tea): Add 1–2 tsp of cut licorice root to 240ml (8 oz) of cold water in a small pot. Cover and bring to a gentle simmer. Simmer for 15–30 minutes. Strain and serve. The longer the simmer, the stronger and sweeter the tea. Sweeten with honey if desired, or blend with other herbs.
As a tincture base: Use in standard tincture preparation with food-grade alcohol. Follow established herbal medicine protocols.
In herbal blends: Licorice root is traditionally used as a harmonising and sweetening herb in blended herbal formulas — it pairs well with peppermint, ginger, fennel, and marshmallow root.
Do not use for more than 4–6 weeks continuously without a break and without practitioner supervision.
