Frontier Co-op Gentian Root Cut & Sifted delivers pure Gentiana lutea root — one of the most intensely bitter herbs in the botanical world, used for over 2,000 years as the cornerstone of digestive bitters, aperitifs, and herbal teas to stimulate digestive function and support healthy appetite. Kosher, non-irradiated. 100g (~59 servings), repackaged by SuperfoodsNZ.
Why
Gentian (Gentiana lutea) is widely regarded as one of the most bitter plants known — its roots contain amarogentin and gentiopicrin, secoiridoid glycosides that are among the bitterest naturally occurring compounds on earth. This extreme bitterness is precisely what makes gentian so therapeutically valuable as a digestive herb. When bitter compounds contact the taste receptors on the tongue and in the digestive tract, they trigger a cascade of digestive responses: stimulating the release of saliva, gastric acid, bile, and pancreatic enzymes; supporting healthy appetite as a traditional pre-meal aperitif herb; promoting bile flow for healthy fat digestion and liver/gallbladder function; and supporting gastric motility to help reduce bloating and sluggish digestion. Gentian root takes 7 to 10 growing seasons to mature and has been used for more than 2,000 years in European herbal medicine — the defining bitter ingredient in traditional digestive bitters formulas, vermouth, and aperitif liqueurs. The 100g size is ideal for trying before committing to the 453g economy bag. Frontier Co-op has been a member-owned source of quality herbs and botanicals since 1976.
